A cold wave is sweeping across parts of Bangladesh, bringing night temperatures as low as 7°C in Sreemangal.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the chill will continue for the next few days, with fog likely in many areas.

Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions and the districts of Gopalganj, Moulvibazar, Cumilla, Feni, Khulna, Jashore, Chuadanga and Kushtia are facing the brunt of the cold wave, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

“The cold wave may continue until Monday,” said meteorologist AKM Nazmul Hoque.

A mild cold wave occurs when the night temperature drops to 10°C to 8°C. A moderate cold wave is when the temperature stays between 8°C and 6°C. A severe cold wave comprises the temperature falling below 6°C.

A cold wave requires the temperature to prevail over a large area. Low temperature at a single station does not constitute a cold wave.

The lowest night temperature in the 24 hours until 9am on Thursday was recorded at 7°C at Sreemangal. The highest day temperature was 27°C, recorded at Teknaf.

In Dhaka, the lowest night temperature was 12.5°C, while the highest day temperature was Tk 21.7°C.

The weather forecast for the next five days says that the weather across the country may remain dry with temporarily partly cloudy skies from Thursday to Monday. The prevailing cold wave may continue throughout these five days.

There may be moderate to thick fog across the country from midnight to the morning over the five days. In some places, the foggy hours might extend into afternoons.

The BMD says the night temperature across the country may fall on Friday, while the day temperature may remain nearly unchanged. The temperature may drop slightly at night and in the day on Saturday.
