The flood situation in the low-lying Haor areas of Netrokona, Habiganj, and Sunamganj has continued to improve as water levels in two more major rivers receded below their respective danger marks.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the Bhogai-Kangsa rivers in Netrokona and the Sutang in Habiganj are now flowing below the pre-monsoon danger level following a significant reduction in rainfall.

“The overall situation is on an improving trend,” FFWC Executive Engineer Manzur Rahman told bdnews24.com on Monday afternoon.

“On Sunday, five rivers in the northeast were flowing above danger levels at five points. That number dropped as the Bhogai-Kangsa and Sutang receded,” he said.

“Major rivers in the Haor basin, including the Surma-Kushiyara and Dhanu-Baulai, have also seen a drop in water levels,” he added.

Despite the overall improvement, three rivers remained above the pre-monsoon danger mark at three points as of 9am on Monday.

The Naljur River was flowing above the danger level at the Jagannathpur point in Sunamganj, while the Someshwari River crossed the mark at the Kalmakanda point in Netrokona.

The Mogra River also remained above the danger level at the Netrokona point.

Officials noted that there was no significant rainfall recorded upstream or within the Haor basin in the last 24 hours, allowing the floodwaters to drain more effectively from the submerged lowlands.

Weather forecasts indicate light to moderate-heavy rainfall in the region over the next two days, followed by light rain on the third day.

The Surma-Kushiyara levels are expected to fall for two days before stabilising, further easing the situation in the Kushiyara basin.

The Bhogai-Kangsa will continue to recede for the next three days.

While the Someshwari remains stable, the Mogra is expected to fall, bringing relief to local residents.

The Manu River is predicted to fall over the next 24 hours.

The Khowai and Juri rivers will remain stable, while the Sutang is expected to continue its recession over the next three days.
