Chattogram is once again experiencing very heavy rain, causing waterlogging in several parts of the port city.

Though the rain had eased slightly on Saturday morning, it began pouring down again at night. The showers turned very heavy after 11pm and continued into Sunday afternoon.

Several parts of the city, including Katalganj, the Agrabad Commercial Area, Zakir Hossain Road Ispahani Gate, Chandgaon, were waterlogged.

Commuters faced difficulties going to their workplaces on the first day of the week amid the heavy rain. Attendance was relatively low at schools as well.

Ismail Bhuiyan, a forecasting official at the Patenga Met Office, said: “The Patenga Met Office has recorded 142.7mm of rain in the 24 hours to noon. The heavy to very heavy rain that is falling now may ease a bit by tomorrow afternoon.”

“But now the monsoon season is in full swing, so the normal monsoon rains will continue. It will rain at regular intervals. Sometimes it can be heavy to very heavy rain.”

Mamun Hossain, an employee at a business in the city’s Agrabad Commercial Area, said: “The water has been rising in Agrabad every day for the past week. Sometimes it’s a bit less, sometimes it’s more. Today the water has risen again. The suffering is endless.”

The rain started in Chattogram last Sunday. From Monday night, several parts of the city were inundated. Record rain submerged many parts of the city on Tuesday. The flooding was at its worst on Sunday with many parts of the city, including the city centre, affected by waterlogging.
