Police have reported the death of an unidentified woman in a road accident opposite the High Court in Dhaka.

Around 1:30am on Friday night, police rescued the severely injured woman and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after receiving a call on the national helpline 999.

She was declared dead by doctors on duty around 2:15am Saturday, according to Sub-Inspector Hamidul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station.

“After receiving the 999 call, we found the woman lying on the road opposite the High Court gate with critical injuries. We immediately took her to the hospital," said Hamidul.

“Locals said the woman was homeless and used to stay near the spot. We believe she was hit by a vehicle while crossing the road,” he added.

The police officer said efforts were under way to identify the woman, adding: “CID members have collected her fingerprints.”

Her body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for post-mortem.
