Born in 1981, Jamaat MP says father gave his life fighting Pakistanis in 1971 Liberation War

He admits to bdnews24.com that his father is still alive

Election affidavits have confirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami MP Md Abdul Muntakim, who claims his his father was martyred in the 1971 Liberation War, was born 10 years later in 1981.

During a discussion over the proposed budget in parliament on Sunday, Muntakim said his family played a role in the 1971 war.

His comments have since garnered humorous reactions on social media.

He said, “My father and grandfather were martyred in the war. My father has six brothers -- four of whom were freedom fighters.”

According to him, his grandfather and 10 of his 18 brothers fought in the war.

“There are 47 freedom fighters in my family. My mother is one of the organisers of the Liberation War. But when I talk about the war today, people make many comments.”

According to the affidavit filed by the Nilphamari-4 MP, he was born on Jan 10, 1981, making him a little over 45 years old.

When asked about the controversy on Tuesday night, Muntakim told bdnews24.com: "My father is still alive. My grandfather is a martyr. He was my father's uncle.”

"I meant that there are martyrs among my grandparents. I didn't literally mean that my father was a martyr."

Liberation War Museum Trustee Mofidul Hoque said, “Any kind of falsehood about the Liberation War is not acceptable. Moreover, it is not desirable for a lawmaker to present such distorted information in parliament.”

“Through this, they [Jamaat] have once again proven what kind of politics they do.”
