A BNP leader has been stabbed to death in Noakhali’s Kabirhat Upazila after he protested against drug use, according to police and his family.
Kabirhat Police Station chief Romel Barua said the attack took place around 11pm on Wednesday in front of a Palli Bidyut substation near Tetultala Bazar in Sundalpur Union. Police have detained two suspects over the incident.
The deceased was identified as Md Faruk, also known as Shahid, 50, hailing from Madhya Sundalpur village.
Faruk was a former publicity secretary of Ward No. 6 BNP in Sundalpur union and a businessman at Tetultala Bazar.
Police have sent the body to the Noakhali General Hospital morgue for a postmortem.
The detainees are Md Arshad Akash, 24, and Md Sajjad Hossain Akash, 19, both residents of Madhya Sundalpur village.
The victim’s elder son, Md Imran, said Arshad Akash had previously driven a battery-powered auto-rickshaw and was locally known as a habitual drug user.
“On Tuesday night, my father got into an argument with Arshad at a shop in Tetultala Bazar over drug use. At one stage, my father grabbed him by the neck and forced him out of the shop,” Imran said.
“The following morning, Arshad told several people that he would kill my father. Then, at night, while my father was returning home after closing his shop, Arshad intercepted him and stabbed him in the spine.”
Imran said his father was first taken to Kabirhat Upazila Health Complex and later to Noakhali General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was being taken to Dhaka for advanced treatment, but he died in the ambulance near Choumuhani intersection.
Officer Romel said, “Preliminary findings suggest the murder was triggered by the victim’s protest against drug use. Legal proceedings are underway.”
