Students from the seven colleges have announced a continuous sit-in outside Shikkha Bhaban on Abdul Gani Road this Sunday, demanding the issuance of the Dhaka Central University Ordinance.
The declaration came around 4:15pm on Wednesday during a briefing outside Dhaka College, delivered by Abdur Rahman, a representative of the student movement demanding university status for the colleges.
Rahman said they no longer wished to inconvenience the public by repeatedly returning to the streets.
“If the ordinance process is not completed [ on Wednesday or Thursday], and the ordinance is not declared, from Sunday morning to evening, and for as long as necessary, every student will remain stationed there until the ordinance is issued,” he said.
BCS General Education Cadre officers fear that the proposed structure -- covering the seven colleges and other government colleges nationwide -- may undermine their promotional rights.
The students, however, insist the university’s legal framework must be confirmed swiftly and demand immediate issuance of the ordinance.
Earlier on Wednesday, students brought out a procession from Dhaka College at around 1:15pm, pressing for the immediate release of the ordinance.
After circling Azimpur, they blocked the road in front of Dhaka College shortly after 2pm.
The march and road blockade halted traffic on Mirpur Road, causing suffering for office-goers, students and pedestrians.
Traffic resumed at around 3:30pm when the students moved off the road about 90 minutes later.
On Sept 24, the education ministry released the draft ordinance for DCU.
The draft proposes dividing the seven colleges into four schools, forming an interdisciplinary structure.
According to the proposal, higher secondary education at the colleges will continue.
The teachers’ platform Seven Colleges Autonomy Protection Council is opposing this model.
They want the proposed school system scrapped, and demand permanent inclusion of BCS education cadres in all academic and administrative posts of the new university.
