Bathing in a canal turned fatal for four children in Narsingdi's Raipura Upazila, where they drowned together.

The incident occurred near Bordkanda of Chanderkandi Union at 11am on Thursday, said Md Mojibur Rahman of Raipura Police Station.

The deceased were identified with single names -- Tabia, 13, Ayesha, 9, Jannat, 8, and Sumaiya, all from Borokanda village.

Police said they were students of Gausia Nure Madina Mohila Madrasa.

Local residents said six students entered a nearby canal to bathe during a break from classes.

Two managed to climb ashore and alerted nearby people, who recovered the other four from the water.

They were all found dead.

Three of the children were taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.

At the hospital, Shamim Mia was overcome with grief after losing his only daughter, Tabia.

Speaking through tears, he said: "I had left home in the morning to catch the Titas train for work and reached Raipura Bazar when I got a call from home saying my daughter had drowned.

“I rushed to the hospital immediately."

Ashraful Rahman, an emergency physician at the health complex, said three children were brought to the facility around 1pm.

"They were already dead when they arrived. None of them had any breathing or heartbeat. The body of another child remains at her home," he said.

Police officer Rahman said, "We have heard that two children were rescued alive and one child is still missing. We will decide on the next course of action after speaking with the family."
