Railway police have arrested a man accused of stabbing a 28-year-old woman to death on railway tracks near Kamalapur station in Dhaka.
The victim, Shyamoli Khatun, was allegedly taken to a dark, secluded spot beside the station by Md Sujon, 40, who stabbed her with a knife before trying to flee.
Locals and police captured him at the scene. CCTV footage also recorded the killing.
Anwar Hossain, superintendent of Dhaka Railway Police, said the murder occurred between 10:45pm and 11pm. During interrogation, Sujon admitted to being in a long relationship with Shyamoli, but claimed she refused to marry him.
“Driven by anger, he committed the murder,” Anwar said.
Police said Sujon carried the knife from his home in a shopping bag, wrapped inside a T-shirt, and lured Shyamoli out on the pretext of an outing before attacking her on the rail line.
Sujon worked at a branch of fashion brand Anjans, while Shyamoli, previously employed at Shwapno supermarket, had been unemployed for several months. Sujon is married with two children. Shyamoli, separated from her husband, lived with her young son.
