Police say the killing of Swechhasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Muchabbir was carried out on the instructions of a fugitive underworld figure believed to be living abroad.
Speaking at a media briefing on Saturday, Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) said investigators believe the murder was ordered by a top criminal known as Binash Dada aka Dilip.
According to investigators, the killing was linked to disputes over extortion and territorial dominance in Karwan Bazar.
The revelation came a day after the DB arrested one of the shooters, identified by a single name as Rahim, during a raid in Narsingdi.
Muchabbir was shot on Jan 7 when motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on him in an alley beside Hotel Super Star in Dhaka’s West Tejturi Para. Abu Sufian Bepari Masud, who was accompanying him, was also shot and injured.

Local residents took the two men to BRB Hospital, where doctors declared Muchabbir dead. Masud was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Muchabbir was a former general secretary of the Dhaka North unit of the Jatiotabadi Swechhasebak Dal and had previously served as a joint secretary of the organisation’s central committee. Masud is the general secretary of the Van Workers’ Union under Tejgaon Thana.
On Jan 8, Muchabbir’s wife Suraiya Begum filed a murder case with Tejgaon Police Station against unidentified suspects.
Police said that following the killing, they conducted raids across Dhaka, Gazipur, Manikganj, Mymensingh and Netrokona.
On Jan 11, officers arrested four people, including Jinat, an alleged shooter, Mohammad Billal, the suspected mastermind behind the shooting, Abdul Qadir, accused of helping the suspects evade arrest, and Mohammad Riaz, who police say carried out reconnaissance at the scene a day before the attack.
A motorcycle without a number plate, believed to have been used in the murder, and Tk 6,000 in cash were seized during the operation.
On Jan 12, Jinat gave a confessional statement before a court. The same day, Riaz and his two brothers, Billal and Abdul Qadir, were remanded to police custody for seven days.
After the remand period, investigators produced the accused before a court on Jan 19 and were granted a fresh three-day remand to further question Billal. He was sent to jail on Thursday after completing the second remand.
So far, five people have been detained in connection with the killing. Police said efforts were continuing to recover the firearm used in the attack.
