Police have submitted the charge sheet against cricketer Tofael Ahmed Raihan in a rape case.
The investigation officer of the case, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Samiul Islam, submitted the charge sheet to the court on Nov 30.
SI Samiul said on Thursday, "We have submitted the charge sheet against cricketer Tofael Ahmed Raihan under section 9(1) of the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act after receiving proof of rape allegations. The witnesses will appear at the court and testify to the truth of the incident.”
SI Tahmina Akhter of the prosecution department said that the next date of the case has been fixed for Dec 30. The charge sheet will be presented in court on that day.
According to the charge sheet, the suspect “raped” the woman multiple times after promising to “marry her.”
Pace bowling all-rounder Tofael is a player in the Bangladesh “A” team.
According to the case details, the victim became acquainted with Tofael on Facebook in January this year. They contacted each other over the “Facebook Messenger” app.
At one point, Tofael and the woman developed a friendship and he propositioned her for a romantic relationship. She did not initially agree. Then, Tofael allegedly promised to marry her and the two developed a romantic relationship. On Jan 31, the suspect took the woman for an outing and “raped” her at a hotel in Gulshan. The case dossier says the rape occurred after multiple promises of marriage.
The young woman filed a rape case with Gulshan Police Station on Aug 1.
After the case was filed, Tofael secured six weeks of anticipatory bail from the High Court on Sept 24. He was ordered to surrender to the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Dhaka before the bail period expired.
However, Tofael did not surrender to the tribunal even after the bail period expired. The plaintiff says, “Tofael had a physical relationship with me with a commitment to marry me. I sought help from his family, but the situation was not resolved. At one point, I wrote to the BCB president complaining about the issue.”
“He assured me (to take some measures) but never kept his word. In this way, I’m facing dishonour, and am feeling demeaned with every step I take, every single day. I want justice from the court.”
