A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Kamrangirchar over a dowry demand of Tk 50,000 in 2002. He was also fined Tk 100,000.
Dhaka's Fourth Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman delivered the verdict on Sunday.
The capital punishment recipient, Titu, was in court when the verdict was announced. He was later sent to prison under a warrant of conviction.
His mother Amena Begum and his brother Shah Alam were acquitted due to lack of evidence connecting them to the crime, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Harunur Rashid.
According to the case dossier, after marrying Dalia in 1997, Titu and his family members began harassing her with dowry demands. Dalia later filed a case over the abuse, but eventually withdrew it and continued living with her husband.
Later, Titu and his family again demanded Tk 50,000 in dowry. When the demand was not met, on Sept 7, 2002, Titu poured kerosene on Dalia and set her on fire.
His brother Shah Alam, sister Jiboni, brother Mostafa, and mother Amena Begum were also accused of assisting in the attack.
Dalia died in hospital six days later.
Her father Rostom Alit then filed a case with Kamrangirchar Police Station. Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Zafar Ali submitted a chargesheet against Titu and two others on Jan 6, 2003.
On Mar 13 that year, the judge framed charges against the three suspects and ordered the trial to begin. During the proceedings, the court recorded testimonies of 12 witnesses. After hearing the defence's statements and closing arguments, the verdict was delivered on Sunday.
