Police have arrested three members of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force (VDP) for allegedly creating chaos during the prime minister's durbar in Gazipur on the occasion of the 46th National Rally of the force.
The arrestees have reportedly admitted to the crime before a Gazipur Special Court on Friday afternoon, said Prosecution Police Inspector Abdul Mannan.
The arrested are Raihan Uddin Sarkar, Ashraful Alam and Shakil Ahmed, all hailing from Gazipur City.
They were trainees of the Youth Leadership Course and leaders of the Town Defence Party, a wing of the force, in their respective areas.
Masud Hasan, adjutant of Ansar and VDP, filed a case with Kaliakair Police Station on Thursday.
The rally was held at the Ansar-VDP Academy in Safipur under Gazipur’s Kaliakair Upazila on Wednesday.
According to the case dossier, a “special group” had been active for a long time to sabotage the May 20 event.
They used the instructor course trainees to raise various demands in an organised manner and try to launch a negative campaign against senior officials.
Those involved in the incident used to keep in regular contact with the trainees through a WhatsApp group.
There, they tried to involve the trainees in a movement by raising different demands. They also tried to create an unstable situation centered around the durbar using unknown local and foreign numbers.
The same group was also active among the 177 members who came to participate in a programme organised in the Ansar-VDP Academy on May 17.
Through them, demands for an increase in allowance, ration benefits, permanent status, priority in recruitment and various administrative benefits were brought forward.
The case alleges that there was a plan to create pressure around the premier’s durbar to achieve these demands.
Kaliakair Police chief Shahidul Islam said the three accused "confessed" to their reported involvement when they were produced before the court.
Later, they were sent to jail.
