A court has sentenced two men to death and 10 others to life imprisonment for the murder of a deed writer in Mymensingh over a land dispute.

The convicts were also fined as the court delivered its verdict nearly 13 years after the killing.

Judge Farhana Ferdous of the Mymensingh Special Judges’ Court handed down the verdict on Wednesday, Special Public Prosecutor Md Akram Hossain said.

Those sentenced to death are Md Farid Khalifa and Md Masud Mia, who remains on the run.

The court sentenced Abdul Matin, Abdus Samad, Md Mosharaf Hossain Mosa, Md Mofazzal Hossain Mosa, Md Tofazzal Hossain Tofa, Md Nazmul Mia, Md Moklechhur Rahman, Md Shahjahan Akand, Md Atikul and Md Siddiq, who is absconding, to life imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, rival parties hacked deed writer Abu Zakaria Mintu to death at the Bhaluka Sub-Registrar's Office on Aug 14, 2013, following a land dispute.

His wife Latifa Khatun filed the murder case with Bhaluka Police Station the following day, naming 16 people as suspects.

Following testimony from 12 witnesses, the court delivered its verdict.

Besides the death sentences and life terms, the court fined the two death-row convicts Tk 30,000 each.

Those sentenced to life imprisonment were fined Tk 50,000 each, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

Lawyers for the complainant and Mintu's family welcomed the verdict and called for its swift execution.
