Five students of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have been injured after they were allegedly attacked by local residents while out looking for food late at night.
The incident took place late on Thursday night near the Shesh Mor area, close to the university campus in Mymensingh.
The victims include four students from the Isha Khan Hall and one from the Maulana Bhashani Hall, according to Mymensingh Kotwali Police Station chief (OC) Nazmus Sakib.
They have been identified by single names as Siam, a third-year student of Animal Husbandry, Antar and Iman, second-year students of Veterinary Science, Tanvir, a first-year Agriculture student — all residents of the Isha Khan Hall — and Priya, a second-year student of Agricultural Economics from the Maulana Bhashani Hall.
University Proctor Prof Md Abdul Alim said officers arrived from Kotwali Police Station and brought the situation under control.
“Legal action will be taken against those involved in the attack on the students,” he said.
Police and local residents say tensions began on Thursday morning, when a group of outsiders entered the Isha Khan Hall premises. Suspecting them of theft, students detained the men, leading to a scuffle between the two sides.
The situation was later defused after hall authorities intervened, and the outsiders were released.
However, the dispute resurfaced late at night.
Around 11pm, when students went towards the Shesh Mor area to eat, they were stopped by locals. The situation escalated, and the outsiders began throwing bricks and stones at the students.
During the attack, one student was struck on the head with an iron pipe, leaving him seriously injured, while another suffered a broken nose. As news of the incident spread, students from Isha Khan Hall and other halls gathered at the scene.
One witness, a student from the Animal Husbandry department at Isha Khan Hall, described how the violence unfolded.
“We were going towards Shesh Mor for dinner, as we do every day. Because it’s close to the hall, we usually eat there. Some locals stopped us. When we asked why, they became aggressive.
“At one point they started throwing bricks. When two of my senior brothers stepped forward, one of them was hit on the head with an iron pipe. His head split open immediately.”
The injured students were first taken to the university’s healthcare centre before being transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
OC Sakib said students remained gathered at Shesh Mor until around 2am on Friday following the incident.
“The situation on campus remains tense. We will be able to provide more details once the situation is fully under control.”
