“Combing operations” are under way across Dhaka amid speculation and “anxiety” surrounding the first anniversary of the interim government, police have said.

They have assured that there is “no security threat” in August.

At a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Saturday, Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Md Masud Alam described August as a “significant month” and said the police remained highly active and alert.

“Concerns are being discussed in the media and among the public. Every police unit and team across all stations is working to address any issues,” he said.

He claimed that many leaders of the ousted government own multiple flats in Dhaka where party men are being sheltered, and those locations are also under police surveillance.

“We’re also operating in residential hotels, messes, and slums where subversive activities might be planned,” he added.

Masud said the combing operations, referred to as “Chiruni Obhijan”, will continue throughout August.

“We are making arrests daily. If someone refuses to show ID or cannot explain their presence, that raises concern,” he said.

Police already announced that traffic will be restricted in parts of Dhaka on Sunday due to multiple rallies and events coinciding with the ongoing HSC and BCS examinations.

A DMP public notice issued by Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sazzat Ali said congestion is expected near Shahbagh, Central Shaheed Minar, and Suhrawardy Udyan.

From noon to 6pm on Sunday, the BNP’s student faction Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal will hold a rally at Shahbagh marking the anniversary of the July Uprising.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) will host a gathering at the Shaheed Minar from 3pm, demanding the July Proclamation and National Charter. Cultural group Saimum Shilpigosthi is also holding a “July Jagoron” festival at Suhrawardy Udyan daily until Aug 4.

Alternative routes have been recommended, including diversions at Intercontinental Dhaka, Katabon, Matsya Bhaban, and the TSC–Raju Sculpture area.

Police advised avoiding roads near Central Shaheed Minar and Suhrawardy Udyan and urged examinees to leave well ahead of time.
