The residence of former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya has been vandalise, looted and set on fire in an attack in Chandpur.
The incident took place in Matlab North Upazila’s Mohanpur late on Saturday, said Syed Muhammad Morshed Hossain, deputy assistant director of the Chandpur Fire Service.
“The ground floor of two three-storey buildings in Maya Chowdhury’s residence was set on fire. We got news of the fire around 11pm. Fire service personnel rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control,” said Morshed.
Inspector (Investigation) Pradeep of Matlab North Police Station said: “I informed the higher ups immediately after receiving the news at night. Later, under the instructions of the superintendent of police, I went to the spot under the leadership of the sir in charge.”
“We have been trying to gather information after bringing the fire under control. Legal action will be taken later,” he added.
Sarwar Mazumder, former senior vice-president of the Matlab North Upazila BNP, said: “This is a disgraceful incident. We do not support this at all. No member of our family is involved in this in any way.”
“Tarique Rahman is our leader. We never engage in the politics of violence. We do not condone the politics of violence.”
Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Matlab Circle) Khairul Kabir Chowdhury said: “We received news regarding vandalism and looting at the house of former MP Maya Chowdhury in the evening. After that, we took the army, police, and Fire Service there.”
“The ground floors of two houses were vandalised and set on fire. However, Fire Service personnel were able to put out the fire quickly. Due to this, the fire was contained to the ground floor.”
Police are investigating who was behind the incident, he said.
However, Maya and his family members were not at home at the time of the incident.
Maya, who received the title of Bir Bikrom during the liberation war, previously served as the minister of disaster management and relief from 2014 to 2019.
He was a member of parliament from the Chandpur-2 constituency. He was also awarded the Freedom Award in 2023 for his contributions in the Liberation War.
Maya has reportedly been in hiding since the Awami League's fall from power amid mass protests led by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement on Aug 5. There are multiple cases filed against him in Chandpur, Dhaka and Narayanganj.
