A Dhaka court has granted seven days for police to interrogate three accused in the killing of scrap trader Lal Chand alias Md Sohag.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman issued the order on Wednesday following a hearing.
The three suspects to be questioned are Nannu Kazi, Rezwan Uddin alias Abhijit Basu, and Tarek Rahman Robin.
Among them, 35-year-old Rezwan Uddin Abhi was arrested in Patuakhali on Tuesday, according to Police Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali.
Kotwali Police chief Md Moniruzzaman, investigation officer in the case, presented the accused in court and requested ten days of questioning for each.
During the hearing, Kaiyum Hossain Nayan represented the state, while no lawyers represented the accused.
After the hearing, the court granted police seven days for questioning the accused.
Earlier, on Jul 10, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin and Robin had been sent to police interrogation.
Robin confessed after two days of grilling in an arms case.
On Saturday, another accused Titon Gazi sent to five days of questioning. On Sunday, the court granted four days for interrogating Md Alamgir and Monir alias Lomba Monir.
On Monday, brothers Sajib Bepari and Rajib Bepari were sent to five days of grilling each. On Tuesday, Mohin was placed in police custody for another five days of questioning.
According to the case document, Sohag was bludgeoned and hacked to death on the evening of Jul 9 outside Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital.
Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case against 19 people with Kotwali police on Jul 10, while police have started a separate arms case.
So far, police have reported arresting nine suspects.
Dhaka Police Commissioner Sazzat said “business rivalry and personal resentment” were the main motives behind Sohag’s murder.
