The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has sent Prof Md Hasibur Rashid, the former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, to prison following his 10-year sentence over the murder of Abu Sayed, the first fatality of the July Uprising.
He was produced before the tribunal on Sunday.
Subsequently, ICT-2 bench Chairman Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury ordered him to be sent to prison under a conviction warrant.
Tribunal Prosecutor Faruk Ahmed said, "He (Prof Hasibur) had been absconding for a long time.
“Tribunal-2 has sent him to the central prison under a conviction warrant. He will serve his sentence as a convicted prisoner."
Noting that Prof Hasibur will have the opportunity to appeal once the full copy of the verdict is published, Faruk said: "It is true that our verdict has been pronounced, but the certified copy has not yet been obtained.
“He will be able to appeal within 30 days of receiving the judgment."
He expressed hope that even if an appeal is filed in the higher court, the sentence of Prof Hasibur will be upheld.
Police arrested Prof Hasibur in a house on Salimullah Road in the capital's Mohammadpur on Saturday night.
He had reportedly been hiding in that Mohammadpur house for a long time. On Saturday night, local residents detained him and informed police.
He had been absconding ever since the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5, 2024, following the student-led mass uprising.
Sayed, a student of the Department of Economics, was killed outside the university in police fire during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
On Apr 9, 2024, Tribunal-2 announced the verdict in the case involving crimes against humanity committed during that murder.
In that widely discussed verdict, the court sentenced 28 individuals to different prison terms. Among them, Prof Hasibur was sentenced to 10 years in prison as the main accused.
