Honking near Dhaka airport to incur Tk 10,000 fine or jail, warns DMP

Police declare airport and nearby zones as silent areas with penalties for violations from Jan 25

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has warned that drivers will face fines of up to Tk 10,000 or three months in jail for honking near Shahjalal International Airport.

In a public notice on Tuesday, the DMP said the ban will take effect from Jan 25 in the Civil Aviation Authority’s roads and parking areas around the airport.

Special mobile courts, with magistrates from the DMP, environment department, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Civil Aviation and Dhaka North City Corporation, will enforce the rules through fines or imprisonment.

The airport zone and a 1.5km stretch from Scholastica School to Hotel Le Méridien, along with Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketan, were declared “silent areas” in September last year.

Honking in these locations is a punishable offence under the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules 2025, the notice said.

Drivers were urged to comply with the regulations and avoid unnecessary noise.
