The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has announced that all buses must operate from within the intercity Sayedabad Terminal as part of a move to restore order to roads in Dhaka.
The decision was made during a coordination meeting chaired by DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam at Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday.
The corporation plans to modernise the terminal according to its original design while evicting all unauthorised counters in its surrounding areas.
"There is no alternative to the full utilisation of the terminal to bring discipline to the roads," Salam said.
"We will develop Sayedabad into a modern, functional facility while ensuring necessary amenities for both owners and workers."
Transport leader and lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, who attended as a special guest, noted that operating from within the terminal would enhance passenger safety and help curb the trend of charging extra fares during Eid and other festive periods.
The meeting also decided to carry out several structural and administrative changes at the terminal, according to a DSCC media statement.
A committee comprising representatives from the Bus Owners' Association, Dhaka South City Corporation, and Traffic Police will coordinate the reallocation of 110 ticket counters across six blocks inside the terminal, the statement said.
All illegal counters outside the terminal and unauthorised shops inside the premises will be evicted immediately, the release said.
Boundary walls will be constructed to streamline bus movement according to the original layout, and better integration with the flyover will be ensured, the meeting decided.
Drainage systems will be upgraded, and abandoned bus parts cluttering the terminal will be removed, according to the meeting.
The terminal will be equipped with a modern breastfeeding centre, rest areas, clean toilets, and neon signboards.
