A mild heatwave is sweeping across 41 districts in Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) says.
In its weather forecast on Wednesday, the department said the Dhaka, Narayanganj, Tangail, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Manikganj, Mymensingh, Chandpur, Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Lakshmipur, Barishal, Patuakhali and Bhola districts, the eight districts in the Rajshahi Division, the eight districts in the Rangpur Division and the 10 districts in the Khulna Division are experiencing a mild to moderate heat wave that will continue into Thursday.
However, the heatwave may ease by Friday, said BMD Meteorologist Md Abdul Hamid Mia.
Meanwhile, the BMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers with squally or gusty winds and lightning in some places in the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions and one or two places in the Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal divisions on Wednesday and in some places in the Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions and one or two places in the Rajshahi, Khulna, and Barishal divisions on Thursday.
Meteorologist Hamid said that if it rains, the temperature may decrease slightly, but the heat wave will continue in most parts of the country on Thursday.
The BMD said that the day and night temperatures may remain largely unchanged across the country on Wednesday and that the day temperature may decrease slightly and the night temperature may remain nearly unchanged on Thursday.
When the temperature is between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius, it is considered a mild heatwave. Temperatures between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius are considered a moderate heatwave, while temperatures from 40 to 42 degrees Celsius are called severe heatwaves. When the temperature rises above 42 degrees Celsius, it is a very severe heatwave.
Some clouds could be seen in the skies of the capital on Wednesday morning. However, the sweltering heat has made life difficult for city residents. At noon, the mercury hit 35.7 degrees Celsius.
The BMD said Nilphamari’s Saidpur recorded the highest temperature in the country over the 24 hours to 6am on Wednesday, with mercury there hitting 38.5 degrees Celsius.
The lowest temperature in the country was in Sylhet at 23.3 degrees Celsius. The BMD said the highest rainfall recorded in the country over the 24 hours was 24mm, also in Sylhet.
