Bangladesh and the United States have held discussions focused on making bilateral relations more "multidimensional" and exploring new avenues for expansion.
The discussions took place on Thursday during a courtesy call by US Assistant Secretary of State Paul Kapur on Humayun Kabir, the foreign affairs advisor to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
A BNP media statement detailing the meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon said the two sides had productive talks on regional cooperation, trade and investment, development partnerships, and other issues of mutual interest.
Humayun hoped the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and the United States would grow stronger and more multidimensional in the future, the statement said.
He also emphasised increasing economic cooperation and joint ventures across various development sectors.
Kapur, President Donald Trump's point person for South Asia, reaffirmed Washington's interest in advancing the relations and pointed to the potential for expanding cooperation, the BNP said.
US Ambassador to Dhaka Brent Christensen and a high-level US delegation also attended the meeting.
Kapur arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday with the aim of strengthening the “strategic partnership” between Bangladesh and the United States.
His visit marks the first high-level trip from Washington since the formation of the new BNP-led government.
On Wednesday, Kapur met Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed.
On Thursday, he also held meetings with delegations from the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
The US assistant secretary also paid tribute at the graves of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
