The wife of former Biman Bangladesh Airlines managing director and chief executive officer Shafiqur Rahman has given a statement before a Dhaka court in a case over the alleged abuse of a minor domestic worker.
After completing seven days of remand, Bithi was produced before the court on Saturday by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Robel Mia of Uttara West Police Station.
As she agreed to give a voluntary confessional statement, the investigator sought permission to record it.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail recorded her statement, according to prosecution SI Tahmina Akter. She was later sent to jail.
In the petition seeking to record the confession, police said the suspect had been extensively questioned in line with High Court directives and admitted involvement in the incident.
It said she had expressed willingness to give a voluntary statement before the court and that recording it was “essential” for a fair investigation.
On Friday, Shafiqur and domestic worker Sufia Begum were also presented in court after being questioned.
Shafiqur initially agreed to give a confessional statement but later refused. He was subsequently sent to jail.
Sufia provided her statement and was also sent to prison.
Earlier on Wednesday, another suspect Rupali Khatun had been sent to jail after completing her remand.
The case was filed on Feb 1 by the girl’s father, Golam Mostafa, a hotel employee, accusing Shafiqur, his wife Bithi, and two domestic workers, Rupali and Sufia.
All four were arrested after the case was lodged.
On Feb 2, a court rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail.
Police later sought seven days of custody for each for interrogation.
On Feb 10, the court allowed five days of questioning for Shafiqur and Rupali, seven days for Bithi, and six days for Sufia.
According to the case statement, Shafiqur lives in Sector 9 of Uttara. A security guard at the house, Jahangir, had been looking for a young girl to look after a child. He later met Mostafa.
After being promised that all expenses, including the girl’s marriage, would be paid for, Mostafa sent his daughter to work at the house in June last year. He last visited her at the house on Nov 2 last year.
After that, as per the case documents, the girl was not allowed to meet her family.
On Jan 31, Bithi phoned Mostafa, saying the child was ill and should be taken home.
“When he arrived that evening, he found his daughter with severe injuries to her hands and other parts of her body. She was barely able to speak, and Bithi could not explain her condition.”
Mostafa admitted her to Gazipur’s Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where she told him “she had been beaten and even burnt with heated kitchen tools”.
