Tourists stranded for two days in Rangamati's Sajek Valley have begun returning home, though travel to the tourist hub remains suspended over safety concerns.

Tourists left Sajek in an Army security convoy around 9am on Friday and reached Khagrachhari by 11:30am, said Suparna Deb Barman, president of the Sajek Resort Cottage Owners' Association.

He said all stranded tourists had come down from Sajek that morning once floodwater receded from the submerged road.

"Of the 600 stranded tourists, 150 left [on Thursday], and the rest left [on Friday]. There are no tourists left in Sajek now," he added.

The district administration had earlier shut Sajek to tourists from Tuesday evening until further notice, citing the risk from persistent rain.

But tourists who had travelled to Sajek on Monday and Tuesday morning got stranded there after two stretches of road went underwater in the downpour, leaving them unable to return.
