Met Office forecasts rain on last two days of Durga Puja

The main Durga Puja observances have commenced across Bangladesh with Shashthi.

While the Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicts weather to remain clear on Saptami and Ashtami, the forecasts for Navami and Dashami, the last two days of the biggest annual religious festival for Bengali Hindus, indicate rain-drenched days.

Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir told bdnews24.com on Sunday, “The weather may be relatively good on the 29th and 30th of September. After that, the rainfall trend will increase.

“We anticipate that there will be more or less rainfall across the country from the 1st to the 4th of October."

However, the shower will be heavier around Rangpur, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, and the coastal areas -- Khulna and Chattogram -- compared with other regions, he added. 

Tariful mentioned that the amount of rainfall across the country will drop considerably after this rain in the first week of October. 

The Met Office also warned that a low-pressure area may form over the north Bay of Bengal and its adjoining central Bay around Oct 1.

When asked if it could intensify further, the meteorologist said that most of the recent low-pressure systems have crossed the coast near the northwest Bay, and the coasts of Andhra, Odisha, and West Bengal.

The regular weather bulletin on Sunday said that the land depression located over south Odisha and adjoining areas moved further west-northwestward, weakened into a well-marked low and now lies over Maharashtra and adjoining areas. It is likely to continue moving west-northwestward and gradually weaken and become insignificant.

The monsoon trough runs through the centre of the well-marked low, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the north Bay, and southern Bangladesh, extending up to Assam. The monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and moderate over the north Bay.

Over the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds may occur at a few places in Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Chattogram divisions, and at one or two places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barishal divisions.

Parts of the country may experience moderately heavy rainfall with day and night temperatures remaining almost unchanged during this period.

In the past 24 hours, the highest recorded rainfall was 58mm in Feni, while Sylhet received 44mm, and Bandarban 35mm.

The highest temperature was recorded in Rajshahi at 36.2 degrees Celsius, while the lowest was in Sylhet at 22.5 degrees Celsius, according to the Met Office.
