German Ambassador Rüdiger Lotz has said Bangladesh is set to host the world’s “largest democratic election” next year, with over 127 million voters expected to exercise their democratic rights.

He made this remark after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on Thursday.

Lotz called this a significant step not only for the country but also for democracy in a “regional and global context”.

The ambassador praised the EC’s preparations for the massive undertaking, saying: “I believe the country needs a reliable election in which multiple political parties can take part.”

He hoped Bangladesh would once again “return to the ranks of democratic countries” worldwide through this election, which is crucial for the nation’s political and social stability.

“I am greeting the people of Bangladesh for returning to democracy,” Lotz added.
