The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in two divisions as the southwest monsoon remains active.
As a result, cautionary signal No. 1 has been issued for inland river ports.
A weather bulletin issued by the BMD on Tuesday said some areas in the Rajshahi and Khulna divisions may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in the 24 hours from 9am on Wednesday.
Generally, rainfall between 1 and 10mm in a 24-hour period is considered light. Rainfall of 11 to 22mm is categorised as moderate, 23 to 43mm as moderately heavy, 44 to 88mm as heavy, and anything above 88mm as extremely heavy.
A separate forecast for inland river ports warned that from 9am to 6pm on Wednesday, gusty or squally winds accompanied by rain or thunderstorms may sweep through regions including Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Dhaka, Faridpur, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram and Sylhet.
Wind speeds may range from 45 to 60kmh from the south or southeast.
In these regions, river ports have been instructed to hoist cautionary signal No. 1.
Meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick said that as of 3pm on Monday, a clear low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and the southwest coast of Bangladesh had intensified into a land depression, remaining centred over the same area.
He added that this system has led to increased air pressure variation in the northern Bay of Bengal, raising the likelihood of gusty or squally winds affecting the northern Bay, coastal areas and maritime ports of the country.
As a precaution, the sea ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to maintain local cautionary signal No. 3.
Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain near the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
