A government primary school teacher who fell ill after a “sound grenade” was fired during a protest in Dhaka has died in hospital eight days later, colleagues say.
Fatema Akter, an assistant teacher at Jhinaia Government Primary School in Matlab North Upazila of Chandpur, died on Sunday morning in the ICU of Mirpur Alok Hospital in the capital.
Mohammad Shamsuddin Masud, one of the convenors of the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council, confirmed her death.
Another leader of the movement, Muhib Ullah, told bdnews24.com that Fatema had collapsed on Nov 8 in Shahbagh after being taken ill when police fired sound grenades during the teachers’ demonstrations.
“She was in hospital for several days and passed away on Sunday morning in the ICU of Mirpur Alok Hospital,” he said.
Government primary school teachers have been pressing for three demands, including pay under the 10th grade.
