Yunus yet to vacate Jamuna as PM plans to move in

The interim government chief advisor continues to live in his official residence despite the formation of an elected government

The now-dissolved interim government’s chief advisor Muhammad Yunus has yet to vacate his official residence, the State Guest House Jamuna.

Despite the formation of a new government after the election, Yunus has continued to live in Jamuna, although there were several plans for him to move elsewhere.

The Nobel laureate was last scheduled to leave on Friday afternoon, but is now expected to vacate the residence on Saturday instead.

An engineer from the Public Works Department told bdnews24.com, “Since the new government was formed, the chief advisor’s side has said several times that he would vacate the residence, as some work needs to be done for the new prime minister.”

“He told us he would leave on Thursday. After that, I do not know,” he said.

Public Works Department Chief Engineer Md Khalekuzzaman Chowdhury told bdnews24.com, “The matter of vacating the residence is being handled by the additional chief engineer. I am not aware of [Yunus] leaving today, but it is expected that Jamuna will be vacated on Saturday afternoon.”

Several officials said Jamuna, located on the capital’s Hare Road, has been chosen as the prime minister’s official residence for security reasons and ease of access to the Secretariat.

Asked about the matter, Khalekuzzaman said: “The prime minister has expressed his intention to stay at Jamuna. It will take about a month to renovate the prime minister’s residence.”

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is currently staying at his private residence in Gulshan.
