An agitated mob of students and the public has beaten two people on suspicion of being Awami league activists during the demolition of the home of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Dhanmondi Road No. 32.
The incident occurred around 11:30am on Thursday.
Witnesses say a woman was beaten for allegedly “shouting a Joy Bangla slogan”, while a man was attacked for referring to the building as “Apa’s home” in reference to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The mob beat the two of them and pushed them towards the main road. There, a photojournalist and several others got them onto a rickshaw.
The woman who was attacked screamed, “Don’t hit me. Brothers, don’t hit me,” when the crowd set upon her. There were no law enforcing personnel in the vicinity at the time.
The woman is believed to be a resident of Farmgate, but her name and identity have not been confirmed.
Around 10:30am, the sole excavator at the site began to glitch, putting a pause on the demolition. The agitated crowd were seen carrying off rods, doors, and furniture in the building.
