UNO says tension rose between BNP and Jamaat activists, but later dissipated

An Independence Day event has been briefly disrupted as tensions arose between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists after a Jamaat MP’s name was not announced, prompting him to leave the venue.

Domar Upazila administrator (UNO) Shayla Sayeed Tonni said the incident occurred around 9am at Domar ML High School grounds during a parade organised by the Niphamari Upazila administration.

Maulana Abdus Sattar, MP for Nilphamari-1 and the district Jamaat chief, was present as the chief guest.

Party activists protested when the host did not announce his name. At the same time, some BNP supporters responded with slogans, escalating the situation.

Law-enforcing agency personnel and officials later brought the situation under control.

The host of the event, Domar BNP Organising Secretary Masud Bin Amin Sumon, denied deliberate omission, saying the script did not include the MP’s name, but he later announced it.

He added that some unruly individuals made objectionable remarks to inflame the situation, claiming no BNP leader or activist was involved.

Sattar said tensions led him to leave voluntarily and urged better management of national events to avoid such incidents.
