Police have filed a chargesheet in court against Rimon Barua alias Tejpriyo Barua Teju, a family member arrested over the murder of a mother and daughter in Chattogram's Anwara.

The chargesheet was submitted to the court on Wednesday, said Additional Superintendent of Police Rasel.

He told bdnews24.com on Thursday morning, "The testimony of 22 people, including four policemen, was recorded during the investigation. In addition, the accused gave a confessional statement under Section 164 in court."

"The investigation into the case was completed after analysing all the information and data, including the autopsy report, medical report, evidence, testimony and confessional statement."

Police officer Rasel said Rimon has been named as the sole suspect in the chargesheet, which was submitted to the court 12 days after the murders.

On the night of Jun 13, Annie Barua, 40, and her daughter Priyanti Barua, 16, were murdered in Chenamati Barua Para of Anwara Upazila.

The following night, police arrested Rimon, the cousin of Annie’s husband Sujon Barua from Patiya. Sujon was also their neighbour.

At a press conference on Jun 15, Chattogram Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said Rimon had borrowed Tk 117,000 from Sujon to buy an autorickshaw.

The money was supposed to be repaid in installments with interest every month.

A document in this regard was kept in Sujon's house. Rumon’s relationship with Sujon deteriorated because he could not pay the money back on a regular basis.

On the night of the killings, the document was stolen from the house. Police believe Rumon went to Sujan's house to take it.

SP Masud said, "On Jun 13, around 10:45pm, Annie Barua was trying to go out through the back door of the house when Rumon grabbed her. When Annie screamed, he stabbed her indiscriminately.

“Priyanti ran over when she heard Annie’s screams, and she was stabbed too. He took the victim's mobile phone and fled."

While fleeing, Rumon threw the knife in the bushes behind Sujon's house. Police later recovered it.

In a video captured by neighbours before her death, Annie had named her murderer.

The police said the video was included as part of their investigation.
