The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested another suspect in the grisly murder of scrap trader Lal Chand alias Md Sohag near Old Dhaka's Mitford Hospital.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Nannu Kazi, was arrested around 1am on Tuesday in Narayanganj's Balia village, according to Lt Col HM Sajjad Hossain, commanding officer of RAB-11.
No further details about the suspect were immediately available.
On the afternoon of Jul 9, Lal Chand, a trader of scrap materials and old wires, was bludgeoned to death with a concrete block in broad daylight near Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital.
According to police and locals, those involved in the killing, as well as those suspected to be behind it, were all known to the victim. Some were even former business associates. That such a violent murder could result from a business dispute has shocked those who knew them.
Following the incident, the victim’s sister, Manjuara Begum, filed a case on Jul 10. Police soon arrested Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, and Tarek Rahman Robin, 22, recovering a firearm from him in the process.
On Friday, the RAB arrested two more suspects, Alamgir, 28, and Monir alias Lomba Monir, 32, at Ibn Sina Hospital in Keraniganj. Later that night, police arrested another suspect, Titon Gazi, 32.
In the early hours of Sunday, two more suspects -- Sajib Bepari and Rajib Bepari -- were arrested in Netrokona.
Lt Col Sajjad said Nannu admitted to his involvement in the killing during interrogation. He has since been handed over to RAB-10 for further legal action.
With Nannu's arrest, the total number of people detained in the high-profile murder case has risen to eight.
