Teachers and staff listed under the government's monthly pay order (MPO) scheme are set to begin a continuous sit-in protest outside the National Press Club on Sunday, demanding a house rent allowance equivalent to 20 percent of their basic salary.
Delwar Hossain Azizi, the member secretary of the alliance seeking nationalisation of the MPO-listed educational institutions, said that organisations involving teachers and staff under the bloc would conduct the programme.
On Sept 30, the government increased the house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and staff by Tk 500. Protest leaders publicly rejected the increase on Oct 5 and called for a protest.
Later, on Oct 6, the education ministry reportedly sent a proposal to the Finance Division suggesting an increase in the rent allowance to at least Tk 2,000 or Tk 3,000.
"We have rejected the Tk 500 increase in house rent allowance. MPO-listed teachers and staff want a rent allowance of at least 20 percent of their basic salary," Azizi said.
"Along with this, we are demanding that our medical allowance be increased from Tk 500 to Tk 1,500 and that the festival allowance be raised from 50 percent to 75 percent of the basic salary. We will demonstrate outside the National Press Club from Sunday morning. Our continuous sit-in will carry on until the demands are met and a gazette is issued."
MPO-listed teachers and staff receive their salaries based on the national pay scale. They also receive Tk 500 monthly medical allowances and, until now, Tk 1,000 in house rent allowance, which has now been raised by Tk 500.
Previously, MPO teachers received 25 percent of their basic salary as a yearly bonus, but after a recent revision in May, they now receive 50 percent of their basic salary as an annual festival allowance. Also, they are entitled to a 20 percent basic salary allowance once a year for the Bengali New Year.
