The Election Commission (EC) has begun publishing the gazette of polling centres for all constituencies ahead of the general elections slated for Feb 12.
EC Deputy Secretary Monir Hossain said the gazette publication started on Jan 15, following approval of the final list for each constituency by the commission.
Under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), the final list of polling centres must be published in the official gazette at least 25 days before voting.
For the first time, citizens both abroad and within the country, including three distinct categories of voters, are eligible to vote through postal ballots.
Over 1.53 million citizens have already registered for this system.
The gazette lists the names of all electoral areas, Upazilas, unions, polling centre names and locations, voter areas, and the number of polling booths segregated by gender (female, male, third gender).
It also specifies the number of voters registered for postal ballots, along with the names and locations of postal ballot counting centres.
The election will involve 42,761 polling centres across the country, serving over 130 million voters with more than 245,000 polling booths.
In all 300 constituencies, 16–18 security personnel will be deployed per centre, with priority given to polling centres considered critical for maintaining law and order.
EC officials added that, as the parliamentary election and referendum are being held simultaneously, the number of secret marking booths per polling station has been increased.
Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that 59 percent of polling centres are considered vulnerable.
He said, “Among the 42,761 polling centres, 8,780 are highly critical, 16,548 are critical, and 17,433 are general. ‘Critical’ refers to centres at risk from a security standpoint.”
A total of nearly 900,000 law-enforcing personnel will be deployed, including: 100,000 Army members, 5,000 Navy, 3,730 Air Force, 149,443 police, 576,314 Ansar and Village Defence Force, 37,453 Border Guard Bangladesh, 3,585 Coast Guard, 7,700 RAB, and 13,390 Fire Service personnel in support roles.
All security personnel will be stationed at polling centres from Feb 8–14, covering seven days of centre-specific responsibilities ahead of the Feb 12 election and referendum.
