Jatiya Party Chairman Ghulam Muhammed Quader has alleged that the nationwide “Operation Devil Hunt” is being carried out sweepingly to suppress dissent.
In a statement to the media on Monday, he said: "The opposition seems to be facing widespread suppression, with fake cases being filed.”
The interim government launched the nationwide “Operation Devil Hunt” on Feb 8 following the attack and vandalism of former liberation war minister AKM Mozammel Haque's house in Gazipur, which led to several injuries in the counter-attack.
In addition to the army, air force, and navy, the operation is being carried out by police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Ansar, and Coast Guard.
Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury claimed the target of the operation is “those who try to destabilise the country, those who disobey the law, miscreants and terrorists.”
Hundreds of people have been arrested in the past two days of this campaign, including Awami League leaders and activists, as well as those accused in other older cases.
Quader alleged that "oppression" is being carried out against the Jatiya Party in this campaign, saying: "Many false cases are being filed against leaders and activists, and they are not being granted bail.
"Normal political programmes like meetings, rallies and processions are being hampered.
“Jatiya Party offices, houses of leaders and activists and business establishments are being attacked.”
The party chairman protested and condemned it, claiming that “false cases” have been filed against some leaders of the Gazipur Metropolitan Jatiya Party.
He called on the government to take measures to stop the “oppression and harassment” of the people.
