The brother of a “BNP leader” has been accused of forcibly snatching a chair away from the principal at a school in Tangail’s Madhabpur.
The incident occurred at the Rani Bhabani Government High School on Tuesday. A video of the incident went viral on social media.
Students from the school held a protest march over the incident on Wednesday against retired col Asadul Islam Azad, who had previously stood as the BNP’s candidate for the Tangail-1 (Madhbupur-Dhanbari) parliamentary seat.
The students have demanded that those involved in the incident be brought to justice within 24 hours.
Witnesses said that BNP leaders and activists who support Azad gathered on Tuesday to mark July Uprising Day. At one stage, Azad and his older brother Ashraf Masud, went to the principal's room at the school.

Principal Md Abdul Bashed said, “On July Uprising Day, BNP leaders and activists gathered at our school. His [Azad’s] brother wanted my chair for retired col Azad.
“Then I said, I don’t know col Azad. Then, without my knowledge, he took my principal’s chair. He misbehaved with me and threatened to fire me. Later, I informed the OC of Madhupur Police Station about the matter.”
Several attempts were made to contact retired col Azad on Thursday afternoon on his mobile phone, but it was turned off.
Farhad Iqbal, general secretary of Tangail’s BNP district unit, said: “I have heard of this incident. That something as shameful as the snatching of the principal’s chair occurred at Rani Bhabani School. We, as a party, have never supported such activities.”
Farhad also said that Azad does not hold any party position.
Madhupur police chief Md Emranul Kabir said, “After the headmaster’s complaint, I spoke to retired col Azad. I have urged both sides to remain calm. I have also urged both sides to sit down on Saturday and find a peaceful solution. They have agreed to this.”
