A man implicated in multiple criminal cases has been beaten to death in Noakhali's Kabirhat Upazila.
The incident took place around 10pm on Saturday near Narottampur's Kalirhat market, according to Kabirhat Police Station chief (OC) Md Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan.
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Mizanur Rahman Roni, was a resident of the Jaindapur area under Kabirhat municipality and the father of two children.
Police recovered his body on Sunday morning and sent it to Noakhali General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police and local residents said Roni had been accused in at least six cases, including allegations of theft and robbery.
Witnesses said that a group of people detained him and beat him with sticks and iron pipes, causing fatal injuries. His body was later left on the road.
Police then recovered bloodstained sticks and iron pipes from the scene, according to OC Bhuiyan. A toy pistol and a small knife were also found in the victim’s pocket.
Bhuiyan said an investigation was under way and that legal action would be taken if a complaint is filed by the victim’s family.
