A group of students from Dhaka Polytechnic Institute have staged a midnight protest, blocking Tejgaon's Sat Rasta intersection.

The protesters are demanding the withdrawal of a government recommendation that would allow BSc degree holders to be appointed to sub-assistant engineer position, a role traditionally reserved for diploma engineers.

They insist the government must scrap the proposal, which was reportedly put forward by a committee led by two advisors.

Upon learning of the recommendation, students launched a procession from their campus around 11:30pm on Wednesday.

By 11:45pm, the demonstrators had occupied Sat Rasta, halting traffic.

The blockade is being held under the banner of the “Technical Students' Movement”.
