A woman married in Bangladesh has rushed to the border after receiving news of her father’s death in India, but barbed wire fencing stood in the way as she had no travel documents.

Later, after the matter was raised with border authorities, troops from both sides held a flag meeting to allow her a final glimpse of her father.

Lt Col Saifullah Siddiqui, commanding officer of Jashore-49 BGB Battalion, said the body of Indian national Jabbar Mondal, 75, was brought on Wednesday afternoon near the main pillar 25/6-S at Dhanyakhola border in Sharsha Upazila after the meeting.

Jabbar’s daughter Mitu Mondal, 38, who lives in Bangladesh following her marriage, and other relatives bid him a final farewell there.

According to the BGB officer, Jabbar, a resident of Bansghata village in Bagdah Police Station of India, died on Tuesday of old age complications. On receiving the news, his daughter and other family members in Bangladesh applied to the BGB to see the body.

The request was then communicated to the BSF, he added.

Afterwards, a flag meeting at company commander level between the BGB and BSF made arrangements for the relatives to see the body.

Mitu is married to Bablu Mondal of Porabari village in Benapole of Sharsha.

Bablu said: “As we had no passport or visa, we were distressed on hearing the news of my father-in-law’s death. Later, we applied to the BGB camp to allow us a last look at his face.

“We are grateful to the BGB for making it possible,” he added.
