Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s candidate for the Barishal-5 constituency Mazibor Rahman Sarwar’s income over the last seven years has declined but his overall assets appear to have increased fourfold over the same time.
This comes after the BNP leader’s affidavit for this year’s parliamentary elections was compared with his 2018 submission.
In the 2018 affidavit, Sarwar declared an annual income of over Tk 4.8 million.
In his latest submission, he reported an annual income of more than Tk 4 million, marking a decrease of Tk 845,049 over the seven-year period.
Sarwar has been a four-time member of parliament from this constituency, which comprises Barishal Sadar Upazila and the City Corporation. In his latest affidavit, Sarwar’s total assets were worth Tk 122.5 million. In the previous one, Sarwar reported assets worth Tk 35.92 million.
Of his latest annual income, Sarwar said Tk 200,000 comes from the agriculture sector, Tk 1.3 million from immovable property, Tk 600,000 from business, Tk 675,000 from shares, and Tk 1.2 million from other sources.
His previous income declaration given in 2018 said he earned Tk 2 lakh from the agriculture sector, Tk 1.3 million from rent on property, Tk 600,000 from business, Tk 605,939 from shares and savings certificates, and Tk 1.2 million from other sources.
Sarwar disclosed his dual citizenship but did not state which country or when he gave it up. Nine cases, including those related to income tax and corruption, are currently pending against him. He has been acquitted or granted exemption in 14 other cases.
