The High Court has ordered authorities to bring before it within 15 working days a young man allegedly taken into Coast Guard custody in Mongla two months ago.
The whereabouts of the man, named Miraj Sheikh, remain unknown.
The court also sought a report on Miraj’s whereabouts, safety and steps taken to trace him.
The order came on Sunday from a bench of Justice Ahmed Sohel and Fatema Anwar after hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Miraj's father Mostafa Sheikh.
Petitioner's lawyer Mujahidul Islam Shaheen said the court issued a rule directing the respondents to produce Miraj before the High Court and disclose his condition.
The petition, filed on Jun 22, named nine respondents, including the home secretary, Coast Guard director general, inspector general of police and RAB chief.
According to the petition, witnesses said Coast Guard personnel picked up 30-year-old fisherman and motorcycle rider Miraj from Mongla's Joymoni area on Apr 10 in front of a tea stall.
His wife Mukta Khatun and father allegedly witnessed the incident.
The Coast Guard has not officially acknowledged detaining Miraj or producing him before police or a court.
After unsuccessful appeals, human chains and complaints, Mukta filed a general diary.
The Coast Guard later sued her, Miraj's mother and sister over an alleged attack on a station.
Mukta, now on bail, appeared at the High Court on Sunday, demanding her husband's return, insisting: "If he committed a crime, try him in court. Why should he disappear?"
