A young man has been hacked to death on his way home after celebrating his birthday with his friends in Mymensingh.

The murder took place on Monday night at the Mazar Road intersection in Gafargaon municipality, said Gafargaon Police Station chief ASM Atiqur Rahman.

The deceased, 24-year-old Nahiyan Robin, was a sophomore student at a local government college.

Witnesses and locals say that it was Nahiyan's birthday on Tuesday. On the occasion, his friends organised a birthday party at the Gafargaon Dakbungalow premises at 12:01am on Tuesday. After cutting his birthday cake there, Nahiyan was returning home on his friend Shakibul Hasan Masum’s motorcycle around 12:30am.

As soon as they reached the Mazar Road intersection, just 500 yards from their home, six to seven assailants who had been waiting in ambush stopped their motorcycle.

Before they could react, the assailants sprayed chili powder in the eyes and faces of Nahiyan and his friend. As they were blinded, the assailants began to hack Nahiyan indiscriminately with sharp weapons.

Nahiyan's friend, the motorcycle driver Shakibul, managed to run away and save himself, but Nahiyan was unable to flee. The criminals left him bloodied and injured on the road, thinking he was dead.

Once the attackers fled, Shakibul's family and locals rescued him in critical condition and rushed him to the Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex.

When his condition deteriorated rapidly, he was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. He died there.

Describing the incident, Shakibul said: “In an instant, they had sprayed chilli powder in our eyes. We couldn't see anything.”

“They attacked us while we were in such a state. I somehow saved myself by running away, but they killed Nahiyan.”

After losing his only son, Nahiyan’s father Mofazzal Hossain said in a cracking voice: “My son was my dream, my only reason for living. Those criminals have left me empty. They erased all my dreams.”

Police officer Atiqur said that an investigation into the murder has been opened and efforts are under way to quickly identify and arrest the criminals involved. However, no one has filed a complaint over the incident yet.
