Suspected thief killed in Mohammadpur ‘mob attack’

An alleged accomplice of his has been hospitalised in critical condition following the incident

A man suspected of theft has been beaten to death by a “mob” in the Chandrima Model Town area of Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.

The incident occurred in the No. 12 Hakkar Par area around 3:15pm on Monday, according to Mehedi Hasan, assistant commissioner of the police’s Mohammadpur Zone.

The deceased has been identified with a single name as Yamin, a 23-year-old from Bhola. Another man identified by a single name - Fahim, 23 – has been admitted to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital with critical injuries as well.

Police official Mehedi said, “Locals caught two mobile thieves red-handed and began to beat them. The two were taken to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where one of them died.”

A stolen phone was recovered from them, he said.

“Two cases are being registered over the incident – one over the theft of the mobile phone, the other over the death,” Mehedi added.
