Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has urged doctors to stay vigilant as Bangladesh prepares for a possible rise in dengue cases.
He also pledged additional medical staffing if hospitals come under pressure.
At a discussion at the National Press Club on Wednesday, the minister said while the country is collectively fighting one outbreak, referring to measles, and making progress, another health hazard is emerging in the form of dengue.
“Dengue is coming. Everyone must stay aware and maintain cleanliness and protocol,” he added.
He urged doctors to spread the word among colleagues across the country on key treatment guidelines set by senior physicians -- avoiding antibiotics, closely monitoring every patient once plasma leakage begins, and administering fluids immediately at the onset of leakage to prevent patients going into shock.
“If problems arise and patient numbers go up, inform us. We will deploy doctors as needed. If necessary, we will even pull in retired physicians. Our priority is to save lives,” he added.
The event was organised by Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) to mark the 48th death anniversary of former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
Referring to Zia's political role, Sakhawat said the Sepoy-People's Revolution had led to his release from captivity and brought him to power.
“He established multi-party democracy in Bangladesh and opened political participation to all,” the minister said.
