A young man has been killed and five others injured in a clash between two groups of cousins over a longstanding family dispute in Sreebardi of Sherpur.
The victim's father filed a case with Sreebardi Police Station on Monday night, station chief Mohammad Nurul Alam said.
The deceased, Amin Ali, 34, was the son of Makbul Hossain of Dakrapara village in Bhelua Union of the Upazila.
Citing the case statement, the police officer said Amin did not live in the village. He lived in Dhaka with his wife and children and worked as a private car driver. He had returned to his village home on Sunday.
The dispute between Amin's family and his cousins had continued for a long time. On Sunday morning, an argument broke out between Amin's brother and their cousins, and Amin also became involved.
Later that night, Amin and his brother were allegedly assaulted over the dispute.
Although the confrontation subsided that night, it resumed on Monday morning. At one stage, six to seven people, including Mehedi, Alok, Shahidul and Faruk, allegedly attacked them, triggering a clash.
Amin sustained critical injuries in the violence and died on Monday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Sherpur District Sadar Hospital.
Makbul Hossain filed a case with the police on Monday night, naming 11 people as accused.
Officer Alam said police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Sherpur District Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem.
Efforts are under way to arrest the accused, but no one had been detained as of Monday night.
