Food-Friendly Programme: 5.5mn families to get 30kg of rice from August

Under the initiative, each family will receive rice at a subsidised rate of Tk 15 per kg

The government is set to start distributing 30kg of rice per month to 5.5 million families across the country from August as part of its Food-Friendly Programme.

The latest phase of the initiative will run for four straight months and will benefit 500,000 more families compared with the previous round of distribution.

Food Advisor Ali Imam Majumdar made the announcement on Tuesday following a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee at the Secretariat.

“Last time, 5 million families received rice. This time, the finance advisor has increased that number to 5.5 million. Each family will receive 30kg of rice for four months starting from August,” he said.

He added that after a break in December and January, the programme will resume in February and March.

Under the Food-Friendly Programme, each family receives rice at a subsidised rate of Tk 15 per kg, with 30kg allocated per month.
