After securing a two-thirds majority in the 2026 election, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to form a new government, with 49 names listed for positions as ministers and state ministers.
While speculation continues over who will secure a place in the cabinet, attention has also turned to the salaries, allowances and privileges they will receive.
President Md Shahabuddin will administer the oath to the new cabinet members at the South Plaza of the parliament building on Tuesday afternoon.
Advisors of the interim government will arrive in vehicles bearing flags and depart without them, symbolising the transfer of authority.
With that transition, the responsibility of governing will formally pass to the new leadership -- along with the benefits accorded to public office.
Tarique’s cabinet will consist of 25 ministers and 24 state ministers. Their salaries and privileges are determined under The Ministers, Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers (Remuneration and Privileges) Act.
Under the state hierarchy, the chief whip and the leader of the opposition enjoy the rank of full ministers, while whips hold the status of state ministers.
SALARY
A minister will receive a monthly salary of Tk 105,000. A state minister will receive Tk 92,000.
HOUSING
Ministers will be provided with well-furnished government residences at state expense. State ministers will receive the same benefit.
If a minister chooses not to reside in a government house, he will receive Tk 80,000 per month as house rent allowance. A state minister will receive Tk 70,000.
If they reside in their own or rented homes, they will receive an amount equivalent to three months’ rent annually for maintenance and management.
The government will bear all utility expenses, including electricity, gas, water and telephone bills.
For decoration of official residences, ministers will receive Tk 500,000 annually, while state ministers will receive Tk 400,000.
VEHICLES AND TRAVEL
Ministers and state ministers will be provided with cars from the government transport pool. They will receive the cost equivalent of 18 litres of fuel daily.
For official travel, including visits to constituencies, they may use a jeep from any organisation or office under their ministry. A daily allowance of Tk 2,000 will be provided for domestic travel.
For air travel, they are entitled to insurance coverage of Tk 1 million annually.
MEDICAL FACILITIES
If a minister or state minister falls ill, the government will bear the full cost of medical treatment. The law does not impose a financial ceiling, though vouchers must be submitted to the Cabinet Division.
ENTERTAINMENT ALLOWANCE
A minister will receive Tk 10,000 per month as an entertainment allowance for hosting domestic and foreign guests. A state minister will receive Tk 7,500.
PERSONAL STAFF
Ministers may appoint a private secretary of deputy secretary rank of their choice. They are also entitled to an assistant private secretary, two personal officers, two office assistants, a cook, a cleaner and a peon.
State ministers are entitled to a private secretary, a personal assistant, an office assistant, a janitor and a peon.
DEVELOPMENT ALLOCATION
Each minister will receive Tk 1 million annually for charitable activities and constituency development, including work on mosques and temples. State ministers will receive Tk 750,000.
From this allocation, a minister may grant up to Tk 50,000 to an individual, while a state minister may provide up to Tk 35,000. The funds are not subject to audit.
