But it turned out to be a hoax, police said.
Munshiganj’s acting superintendent of police Md Zakir Hossain Majumder said a rumour about Hossain’s body floating in the river spread in the afternoon.
“Police searched the river after journalists called to inquire about the matter,” he told bdnews24.com.
“We didn’t find anything. The whole thing is a mere rumour,” SP Majumder added.
Seven people, including councillor Nazrul Islam, were abducted from Narayanganj on Apr 27. Their bodies were found in the Shitalakhyya River several days later.
The victims’ relatives have blamed local Awami League leader Nur Hossain for the killings. Hossain had gone into hiding since the incident.
Nazrul’s father-in-law Shahidul Islam had claimed that RAB took bribes from Hossain to carry out the murders.
Hossain’s current whereabouts are unclear.
On Monday, Shahidul Islam claimed Hossain had fled to Kolkata with RAB’s help.
Munshiganj police could not say who circulated the rumours but Sadar Police Station OC Shahidul Islam suspects a ‘vested quarter’.
Journalists thronged the Dhaleswari riverbank on hearing the news.
OC Islam said they were searching the Shitalakhyya and Meghna rivers to find out whether the rumour was true.
He said many people claimed that Hossain was in Munshiganj when the bodies of the seven were being recovered from the Shitalakhyya and that he had fled on a speedboat afterwards.
“We are looking into the allegations,” said the OC.
